NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday released a “charge-sheet” against 10 years of “misrule” by the Congress Government in Delhi. It accused Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit of making false promises to the people and not delivering on even what had been promised by the Congress in its previous election manifestos. The charge-sheet was released jointly by the BJP general secretary in-charge of Delhi elections, Arun Jaitley, the party’s Chief Ministerial candidate, Vijay Kumar Malhotra, and State BJP president Harsh Vardhan. Mentioning “the onslaught of price rise, thirsty Delhi, heavy burden of privatisation of power, neglect of the poor, the dirty Yamuna, ruination of industries, chaotic transport, deteriorating health services, dismal state of education, increasing employment and exploitation of workers”, the charge-sheet alleges attempts to destroy the commercial character of Delhi and betrayal of the people living in unauthorised colonies. Dr. Vardhan said the charge-sheet focuses on 10 years of “mis-governance and corruption” in every department of the Government. “Ms Dikshit has not solved any problem and only corruption and inefficiency have thrived,” he added. The BJP leader said government and corruption had become synonyms during the past 10 years of which the last two had been spent in making the government a money-making machine. Despite promises, no flats had been allotted to jhuggi dwellers, he said, adding, “Lakhs of forms have been filled up but no one knows when the draw would take place. Also, there are only a few hundred flats that are actually ready.” The Government, he said, also failed to get even one unauthorised colony regularised. “Former BJP Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma had pleaded the case of the colonies in courts which had allowed limited development but rather than undertaking development works, the Delhi Government went ahead with the ad hoc regularisation gimmick and even involved Congress president Sonia Gandhi in it.” Dr. Vardhan also questioned how come the Yamuna was still so dirty if Rs.1,800 crore had been spent on it. He said the Government had also failed to provide people relief from the killer Blueline buses by phasing them out and had also been persisting with the ill-advised BRT bus corridor that has proved to be the “corridor of death”. Prof. Malhotra said that while betraying people by not fulfilling the promises made in its manifesto, the Congress Government had allowed corruption to thrive. “As many as 50 lakh people live in unauthorised colonies, but people still cannot get their building plans sanctioned as the zonal, district and development plans of the Government are not ready.” Likewise, he said, for the 25 lakh people living in slums and jhuggi clusters, not one flat has been constructed. Prof. Malhotra charged that not a single medical college or government college had been added in the past five years and Delhi suffers from a 50,000-bed shortage in hospitals. He also criticised the Delhi Government for providing just 1,600 jobs in the last 10 years while lakhs had been rendered unemployed due to sealing, demolitions and recession. Promising that on coming to power the BJP would speedily clear the file pertaining to Parliament attack case convict Afzal Guru, Prof. Malhotra said he would also send the power privatisation scam case to the Central Bureau of Investigation as per the recommendations of the Public Accounts Committee. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
