Taxi drivers resent ‘manhandling’

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Taxi drivers at Terminal-2 of Delhi airport went on strike on Sunday night alleging that some of them were manhandled by the police during a drive against touts.

In the wake of the incident in which a non-resident Indian was abducted, robbed and killed by three cab drivers whom he had hired outside the airport on October 10, the police have launched a drive against touts operating at the airport. On Sunday night they were carrying out the exercise when the taxi drivers gathered at one place and started shouting slogans alleging that a taxi driver had been beaten up by the police.

The taxi drivers refused to entertain passenger. Eventually senior police officers reached the spot and persuaded them to resume service and normality was restored around 1 a.m.
