Sports scholarships presented

Chennai: Scholarships worth Rs.3.52 crore were awarded to sportspersons at a gala function organised by the St. Joseph’s College of Engineering on Wednesday. Over 75 students, who had the distinction of representing the college, university, State and the country, received sports / merit scholarships from the chief guest, C. Sylendrababu, IGP, Special Task Force, in the presence of D. Babu Manoharan, Director, St. Joseph’s College of Engineering.

Dr. Sylendrababu underlined the synthesis between education and sports in shaping a complete individual. Focussing on the elements motivation and ambition, he exhorted the students to adhere to the core values and reiterated that disability is not a deterrent to success.

St. Joseph’s College is among the few institutions in the State to allot around 100 seats under a special quota for meritorious students to pursue their interests in sports. They are given free hostel accommodation till the completion of the degree and exempted from paying tuition fees. A majority of them get good placements too.

The sportspersons received their merit / sports scholarships for their talent displayed in athletics, volleyball, basketball, ball badminton, kabaddi, weightlifting, football, tennis, chess and hockey.

They included the National junior basketball players Ashey Mathew and Pavithra.

Top athlete, G. Gayathri, who is taking part in the junior National meet at Mysore could not be present at the function. — Special Correspondent
