Suicide of village youth causes tension

NAGAPATTINAM: There was tension for some time on the Nagapattinam-Karaikal Road as villagers of Therkupalapanachery near here staged a road roko protesting against the alleged suicide of a youth Senthilkumar of that village.

The villagers alleged that Senthilkumar (19) had committed suicide after being beaten by Raja (24) and youths of another community on the previous day.

They wanted police to take immediate action and staged the road roko. District Revenue Officer A. Annadurai arrived on the scene with Superintendent of Police Ashwin Kotnis and assured the villagers that immediate action would be taken.

The crowd dispersed following the assurance that the police would investigate the case. Later, police sources said that Raja had been arrested and detained under Section 306 of the IPC (abetment of suicide).
