Smooth flow soon: The Maravaneri Bund Road in Salem. — SALEM: The Salem Corporation has begun the concrete lining of Maravaneri stream, a major drainage channel running along Maravaneri Bund Road here recently, to ensure smooth flow of waste water in it. People in Maravaneri faced numerous problems as the channel remained heavily choked. Waste water overflowed from the channel and entered into the residential colonies in the area. In October this year, the heavily chocked channel spewed sewage on the campus of the near-by Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Hostel. There is always a stench in the air due to continuous stagnation of sewage in the channel, residents point out. The Corporation prepared an estimate a few months ago for the concrete lining of the channel at a cost of Rs. 60 lakh. Officials said the construction would be completed shortly. The Corporation would also widen a portion of the road and build a footpath after completing the lining work. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
