NEW DELHI: Jawaharlal Nehru University is hosting a four-day “International Association of Historians of Asia” conference on its campus here beginning this Friday. The 20th edition of the IAHA conference assumes significance as it will be held in the country for the first time. Forty scholars from across the world will deliberate on issues relating to Asian culture, society, polity, health and environment from the historical perspective in 30 parallel sessions that will be held on the JNU campus. Only the 12th and 14th sessions will be organised at India International Centre in Lodhi Estate. The first IAHA conference was held at Manila in 1960 and since then it has been held regularly once every two years in different capitals and cities of Asia. Over the years, IAHA has grown in membership, encouraged new themes and brought together scholars working on Asia from different parts of the world. IAHA’s first conference was aimed at giving scholars from different countries a chance to come together and exchange ideas and information with regard to historical study and research in their respective countries. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
