A convention centre planned

Tirupur: The Corporation plans to chalk out a project to beautify the 3.7-km stretch of Noyyal river passing through city limits and to build a state-of-the-art convention hall at the city centre in a phased manner, according to Corporation Commissioner M. Ashokan.

Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, he said that the beautification project envisage strengthening of lining on both sides of the river and establishment of landscaping alongside the watercourse.

Parameter

The scheme would be drawn in a manner to overcome the inadequacies pertaining to environment and hydrology parameters thereby help the waterway retain its aesthetic look.

The convention centre was planned to be set up in lieu of existing Corporation Town hall situated alongside Kumaran road.

Regarding administration’s recent decision to hike the property taxes for residential, commercial and industrial buildings, he said that the move was vital considering the financial liabilities faced in terms of repayment of loans taken up for development projects.

“We are refunding annually Rs. 5.10 crore (interest with premium) to Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited for the loan obtained to strengthen the roads and augment ongoing solid waste management project at a total outlay of Rs. 31 crore,” he added.

Additional amount

The heightening of tax slabs would fetch an additional Rs. 3 crore to the Corporation exchequer, taking the total collection of property taxes per annum to Rs. 23 crore.

The Commissioner said that the property tax at the new slabs would be collected from this month.
