Minister conducts surprise raid

KOLLAM: Minister for Food and Civil Supplies C. Divakaran has said that to keep the prices of essential commodities under control, both wholesale and retail shops in all district will be subjected to regular surprise inspections by the Civil Supplies Department.

The Minister, who conducted a surprise inspection at the shops in Chamakada wholesale market here on Friday, said godown owners stocking foodgrains, edible oils and pulses would have to urgently renew their licences.

If licences were not renewed, the entire stock in such godowns would be confiscated under the relevant provisions of the Essential Commodities Act.

He said all shops would have to compulsorily display the price list and stock position in full view of the customers. If they failed to comply with the norm, the licences would be cancelled.

He said the move was a step to prevent hoarding. These steps were being taken consequent upon rumours that a price rise phase loomed large over the State. Mr. Divakaran said through the inspection in Kollam, he was convinced that after Onam, the price of rice did not rise.
