Government earlier submitted that burning of waste was stopped at Perungudi landfill site CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has ordered issue of notice to the Chennai Corporation Commissioner and the Commissioner of Alandur Municipality to showcause why contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against them for violating court orders with regard to burning of waste material at the Perungudi landfill site here. The authorities have been provided three weeks time. The matter related to a writ petition in which it was submitted that in the early 1980s, Metrowater permitted the Corporation to dump waste at Perungudi, which at present along with Kodungaiyur was a major recipient of solid waste. Solid waste was burnt to collect metals. When the matter came up before the First Bench comprising the Chief Justice A.K.Ganguly and Justice F.M.Ibrahim Kalifulla, the petitioner’s counsel submitted video recording and photographs taken by the petitioner, which were stored in a laptop. After seeing them, the Bench found that garbage was still being burnt. During the last hearing, the government side had submitted before the Madras High Court that burning of waste was stopped at the landfill site. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
