Campaign: People from different walks of life participating in the ‘Diabetes Walk’ in Bangalore on Friday. Bangalore: A number of people participated in the “Diabetes Walk” organised as part of World Diabetes Day here on Friday. The walk was flagged off by Minister for Home V.S. Acharya. The walk, organised by healthcare company Novo Nordisk, saw the participation of people from different walks of life. Participants included Gopalakrishna Gowda, judge of the High Court of Karnataka; R. Ashok, Minister for Transport; and K.M. Krishnamurthy, MLA. Pledge
They pledged to fight diabetes through awareness campaigns. The event included talks on the critical issues of diabetes among children and adolescents in keeping with the International Diabetes Federation theme. Events were also held in schools and colleges where children, teachers and principals were informed about the issues, complications and therapy for young children with diabetes. “India is considered the diabetes capital of the world with more than 40 million affected people. The walk is a step in the right direction to raise the bar in the fight against diabetes,” Dr. Acharya said. The Minister also said that it was important for people to come together to take cognisance of the ills associated with diabetes and associate with activities that would further the understanding of better diabetes management. Melvin D’Souza, managing director, Novo Nordisk India Private Ltd., said that the company had launched initiatives to tackle the problem faced by children and youth in India. ‘A mission’“We have embarked on a mission to spread awareness about the various issues confronting young people with diabetes as well as those at risk.
