Staff Reporter

KARUR: Take immediate steps to avert any untoward incident in the educational premises in Karur district, District Collector J. Uma Maheswari told heads of institutions and officials from the Department of Education at a meeting here on Saturday.

The meeting called to discuss the role of educational institutions in enrolling students and other eligible youngsters in the colleges in the draft photo electoral rolls in the district saw the District Collector counsel caution to the authorities, especially since the meeting came close on the heels of the clashes between groups of students at the Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, Chennai.

It was imperative that teachers impart virtues and good character to the students along with the regular studies, Dr. Uma Mahewari said. Imbue spirit of camaraderie and brotherhood amongst the students so that violence never took root among the young minds, she observed.

In fine, she reminded teachers and administrators, to take effective steps to ensure that educational institutions in the district remained peaceful. Dr. Uma Maheswari also urged the authorities to contribute effectively in enrolling all eligible youngsters in the draft photo electoral rolls that was being prepared and verified in the district currently.

Turning her attention to the sprouting of unrecognized educational institutions that were causing havoc in the lives of gullible students and parents who find themselves in the dock frequently in the district, Dr. Uma Maheswari observed that the district administration would take all possible steps to prevent such bogus institutions from taking roots in the district. That would be feasible only by continued vigil on the part of the officials and the public who should exercise caution when seeking admissions to their wards.

Pretty soon an official exclusively to deal with such subjects would be appointed at the district collectorate and efforts would be made to display a list of government approved educational institutions in the district at the Collectorate and Taluk Offices in the district, Dr. Uma Maheswari noted. District Revenue Officer Jawahar Shanthakumar and other officials and head of educational institutions participated in the deliberations.
