SALEM: The Salem Government College of Engineering will have a full-fledged digital library at the beginning of February 2009, which will enable the students to access a vast collection of e-resources on various subjects at a mouse click.

The college has already constructed a separate building for the establishment of the digital library at a cost of Rs. 1 crore. The library will be equipped with the state-of-the-art facilities including computers and video conferencing technology shortly.

Equipment

The college has planned to procure equipment for about Rs. 87 lakh. The funds were allotted under the Part – II scheme of the State Government, College Principal S.R. Damodarasamy said.

Tenders have been already called for the procurement of equipment and the college is expected to receive them in December this year.

A full-fledged digital library would start functioning at the beginning of February 2009, he added.

The college has planned to subscribe to various organisations to get access to the e-resources.

Students will be able to access a large number of online educational resources including journals and e-books through these subscriptions.

About 100 computers will be installed at the library to facilitate students to access the resources online.

Research

The establishment of the library is expected to strengthen the college’s research potential and students will be able to get the up-to-date information in their chosen field quickly.
