Plea in court to stop killing of fishermen

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: A resident of Ranipet has filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Union government to stop giving training and supplying weapons to the Sri Lankan military and also take steps to ensure that the island government stopped killing Tamil Nadu fishermen, and Tamils on the island.

In his petition, S.Mohana Sukumar said the Sri Lankan Army had killed more than 600 Tamil Nadu fishermen and wounded several others. Under the Constitution, the Centre had a duty to protect every Indian from enemy countries, but it was not only keeping silent but also assisting Sri Lanka in purchasing weapons from other countries.

It was imparting training to the island’s armed forces in operating weapons.

The Sri Lankan army had killed more than one lakh Tamils in Sri Lanka and wounded several others. Tamils’ houses had been destroyed in the bombings, the petitioner said.
