Hogenakkal: Manmohan’s intervention sought

Bangalore: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has sought the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in resolving the disputes surrounding the Hogenakkal Drinking Water Project.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, written on Monday, Mr. Yeddyurappa stated that although the Union Government had promised to convene an inter-State meeting to resolve the matter, “no such meeting has been convened.” There were several “unresolved issues” surrounding the project, the letter adds: the “inter-State implications” of the project remain “unexamined;” the inter-State boundaries in the common reach of the Cauvery river have not yet been demarcated; the construction of power projects according to the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal needs to be examined; and the Tamil Nadu Government had not yet furnished a project report to the Karnataka Government.

The letter adds that “in the meanwhile, statements have been issued by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu as well as Tamil Nadu Minister for Water Resources to the effect that ‘nothing can stop Hogenakkal project.” Mr. Yeddyurappa has sought a personal meeting with Mr. Singh.
