COIMBATORE: A team of the Coimbatore Rural Police seized early on Monday 75 cans containing 2,625 litres of rectified spirit from a farm near Karunya Nagar, about 30 km west of the city. The team went to the farm following a tip-off that fermented wash from the farm was being smuggled to Kerala. When the team reached the farm, a few persons escaped in a car on seeing the police. Four others, including the watchman at the farm, were arrested and the fermented wash seized. Those held were: Kandasamy (55), the watchman, Nazar (30) of Veerakeralam, a suburb west of the city, Jayakumar (27) or Ernakulam and Praveen (26) of Thrissur. They had told the police that the rectified spirit was meant for mixing with toddy in Kerala. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
