Corrections and Clarifications

  • The caption of the accompanying AP photograph in a box story “Monsoon Clues — China’s history: set in ice, hidden in a cave” (“International” page, November 9, 2008) was “Treasure-Trove: A file photo of a stalactite in a cave in Guangxi, Southern China.” It should have been stalagmite, as mentioned in the text and as seen clearly in the picture. Stalactites are structures formed at the ceiling and stalagmites are formed on the floor by calcium salts deposited by dripping water.

  • The fourth paragraph of a report “Centre seeks reports on communal violence” (November 13, 2008) wrongly included the Janata Dal (U) along with the Rashtriya Janata Dal and Lok Jan Shakti Party, as part of the UPA.

  • The third paragraph of an AP cricket report “Akmal stars for Pakistan” (“Sport”, November 14, 2008) was “Needing 16 runs in the final over, Akmal hit two sixes off the first two deliveries from fast bowler Jerome Taylor to script a stunning win.” Pakistan needed 17 runs in the final over. Akmal hit two sixes off the second and third deliveries, and not off the first two deliveries. The first delivery was faced by Fawad Alam who scored one run to make Akmal to bat.

  • In an athletics report “Yogaraj jumps to new record” (“Sport”, November 13, 2008), it was incorrectly mentioned in the text that Tamil Nadu’s Lakshman Yogaraj set a new meet record in the boys’ under-20 long jump event, in the 24th edition of the Junior National athletic championship in Mysore. It should have been high jump event, as mentioned in the results column and caption of the accompanying photograph.

  • The second paragraph of a PTI report “Ricky Ponting talks tough” (“Sport”, November 12, 2008) was “Ponting said there was no reason why Australia could not bounce back and win all the six home Tests this summer despite the setback in India ….” It should have been five home tests (two against New Zealand and three against South Africa.)
