BAD SHAPE: The Tiruvottiyur-Ponneri High Road is an apology for road.

CHENNAI: Residents of Manali New Town and localities near Tiruvottiyur-Ponneri High Road observed a fast to stress the need for completing the road development project at the earliest.

President of Manali New Town Residents’ Association R. Mahalingam said, “The poor condition of Tiruvottiyur-Ponneri High Road on account of the incomplete work has affected normal life of the residents.”

The residents claimed that around 500 accidents had occurred on the road in the past two years, thanks to the combination of bad road and reckless driving.

They urged the Central and the State governments to take immediate action . The residents threatened to intensify their agitation if the issue was not immediately addressed.

“The lack of efficient parking facility in the container yards on Tiruvottiyur-Ponneri High Road has compounded the problem,” said V. Dakshinamoorthy, a resident.

Traffic congestion caused mainly on account of heavy vehicles parked along the roads, is another irritant.

He said that many of the residents had started to shift to other places with better roads owing to difficulty in commuting on account of traffic congestion.

“The traffic congestion has prevented many students from reaching examination hall in time,” said V. Aruldas, a resident.
