Student dies during surgery, case registered against hospital

HYDERABAD: Narayana Junior College student at Chengicherla, A. Saket Reddy, 17, who was injured when the college building parapet wall collapsed few weeks ago, died on Monday while being operated upon at Kamineni Hospital.

The L.B. Nagar police registered a case of rash and negligent act resulting in death under Section 304-A of the Indian Penal Code against the hospital following a complaint by the student’s father A. Srinivas Reddy. “We are told two doctors performed surgery on the teenager for blood clots in lungs. They are yet to be identified,” Inspector Mahender told reporters.

One student was killed and 28 more, including Saket Reddy, sustained injuries in the parapet wall collapse incident in the college on September 21. Saket was then admitted to Kamineni Hospital as he suffered fractures in his ribs.

He was discharged after a few days. The Inspector, quoting the student’s family members, said Saket Reddy complained of pain in the lungs even after being discharged.

He had been consulting doctors of the hospital from time to time. They reportedly told him that they need to perform a minor surgery to completely cure him, Mr. Mahender explained. As per the doctors’ advice, Saket was admitted to the hospital on Saturday.

Saket’s family members were shocked when the hospital staff informed them that he died while the surgery was on around 3.30 p.m. They alleged that negligence of the doctors claimed the student’s life. Mild tension prevailed at the hospital when activists of a student organisation, who assembled at the hospital on learning about the student’s death, attacked an employee of Narayana College, Nagaraju. Police rushed to the spot and dispersed the student activists resorting to mild lathi-charge.
