Staff Reporter

THENI: The Theni District Consumer Redressal Forum directed Uthamapalayam branch of State Bank of India to pay a compensation of Rs.15,000 for deficiency of service here on Tuesday.

The petitioner Pandeeswaran (40) of Uthamapalayam had opened a savings account with the branch and deposited Rs.1,000 on February 2, 2007.

He had requested for a cheque book to operate his account and for financial transactions.

Appeal rejected

But the bank categorically rejected his appeal and informed that the cheque book would be given only to the current account holders.

In a fit of disgust, he filed a case with the Forum on April 25, 2008 seeking suitable compensation and remedy.

Compensation

On hearing the case, the president of the TDCRF Sankara Narayanan Pillai and member Gobi Jayanthi ordered that the branch should pay a compensation of Rs.5,000 for deficiency of services, Rs.5,000 for mental agony and Rs.5,000 for court expenses. The compensation along with the costs should be paid to the petitioner within three months.
