50-bed maternity centre in Tirupur soon

Tirupur: Steps were being taken to expedite the completion of development works at the District Headquarters Hospital in Tirupur to enable the institution to obtain accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH) at the earliest, according to S. Vijayakumar, Project Director, Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project (TNHSP).

Speaking to reporters after inspecting the facilities at the hospital on Tuesday, he said that as part of efforts to enhance the infrastructure at the hospital, a 50-bed maternity centre and facilities to improve disposal of medical wastes would be established and renovation works would be taken up, all at an outlay of Rs 1.66 crore. The project cost was earmarked under the World Bank-aided TNHSP.

The proposed maternity ward would increase the institutional delivery and thus reduce the infant mortality rate considerably.

Mr. Vijayakumar said that the critical gaps existed in the infrastructure front even after the completion of these projects would be filled in a phased manner thereby help the institution raise its standard to the levels stipulated by the NABH.

“The Public Works Department will be entrusted with the preparation of financial estimate required for carrying out the projects to overcome the voids,” he added.

He pointed out that the accreditation would result in high quality of health care and safety with patients being the biggest beneficiaries.

He said that modern ambulances fitted with Global Positioning System would become operational in Tirupur health unit district soon to improve emergency response care. Deputy Director of TNHSP Vinay Kumar, Deputy Director of Health V. Vijayalakshmi, City Health Officer K.R. Jawaharlal and senior officials of District Headquarters Hospital, were present.
