29 tax evasion cases come to light

CUTTACK: At least 29 tax evasion cases were detected by State vigilance after conducting raids at different business houses in October 2008.

According to a vigilance release, the raids were conducted by Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur, Balasore and Koraput divisions of the anti-corruption wing of the state police.

Casual tax

The release said that on actual suppression of gross turnover (GTO) of Rs 127.63 crore, only Rs 9.53 crores is expected to be generated after assessment towards revenue.

Besides, vigilance has collected Rs 75.23 lakh as casual tax at the spot in course of field enforcement activities.

Forest cases

The release further added that along with forest department sleuths, vigilance officers have also detected 13 forest offence cases and seized timber of different varieties and sizes along with machinery worth over Rs 3.77 lakh during the month of October.

Convicted

Former court officer of Orissa High Court Dillip Kumar Ray has been convicted by vigilance court and has been sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) for one year and pay a fine of Rs 50,000 on charges of acquisition and possession of disproportionate assets.

Ray was facing trial for possessing assets to the tune of Rs 1.45 lakhs.

Disproportionate assets

Vigilance special judge Bijay Narayan Mishra held the former court officer guilty of the charges and convicted him as the latter could not satisfactorily account for the assets. Cuttack vigilance SP R N Mohapatra was conducting the case on behalf of the prosecution.
