Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: Collector R. Palanisamy recently inaugurated the bulk milk cooling centre on the premises of the Melnariappanur women co-operative milk producers’ society near here.

The 5000-litre capacity milk cooler, valued at Rs.20 lakh, has been installed in the centre.

Besides catering to the needs of the Melnariappanur society, the centre would also collect milk from seven other societies.

A statement from the Collectorate said the Melnariappanur society started in October 1996 had registered an impressive growth, i.e., the quantum of milk collection had gone up from 130 litres a day to 1,650 litres a day.

During 2007-08 the society sold 5,47,236 litres of milk worth Rs.55,20,543 both in the open market and to the Villupuram Aavin, with the latter procuring the bulk quantum.

Last year it earned a profit of Rs.2,05,347 and gave away impressive dividends to its members.

The centre was provided with an automatic milk collection unit, costing Rs.1.80 lakh.

It was equipped with electronic gadgets and optical milk analysers.

It would generate data on suppliers, quantum of milk, fat content, SNF and so on.
