Tirupur: A total of 52 goodwill committees will be formed in as many numbers of wards under Tirupur Corporation limit before this month-end to improve law and order and bring down crime, according to P. Sivanandi, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Coimbatore range).

Interacting with people at a police-public interface organised by district police here on Wednesday, he said that each of the committees would be constituted with a total of 25 members selected from among the elected representatives of civic bodies and people from different walks of life.

The police officials promised the public that steps would be taken to relocate 150 more police personnel into Tirupur within a month. The strength required would be roped in from other districts within the Coimbatore range. “At present, only 260 police personnel are there in Tirupur sub-division for a population of about 10 lakh,” Mr. Sivanandi said. The DIG told the audience that in an attempt to move police towards the public, a system had been introduced by which the police officials would visit homes of the complainants to receive the grievances.

“The copy of First Information Report of the case will then be delivered at the doorsteps of the person who lodges the complaints to avoid him from waiting endlessly at the stations to obtain the same,” he said.

He said plans were afoot to issue identity cards to entire residents of Tirupur. C. Govindasamy, MLA, urged the police to take effective steps to prevent anti-social elements from holding ‘katta panchayat’ (kangaroo courts) in Tirupur and nearby areas.

Mayor K. Selvaraj, Superintendent of Police Karthikeyan and senior police officials were present.
