Diabetes is not a disease; only a disorder Regular 40 minutes brisk walk needed for patients TIRUCHI: The Health and Family Welfare Department of the Goldenrock Railway Hospital observed the World Diabetes Day by conducting a ‘health education programme’ for Railway employees and their family members recently. More than 200 employees and families participated. Chief Medical Superintendent, Goldenrock Railway Hospital, P. Velusamy explained the importance of diabetes awareness and symptoms. He suggested glucose tolerance test for adults above 40 years to find out whether they had diabetes. He also spoke of the organs affected by uncontrolled diabetes. Dr. Velusamy said diabetes is not a disease, but only a disorder. The hospital took utmost care before administering drugs. The people affected by diabetes were given special advice on food habits. They were told to go for 40 minutes brisk walk regularly. If diabetes is not controlled even after the physical exercise and the food habits, then only they were put under medication, he added. Senior Divisional Medical Officer Dr. Muruganandam, Senior Medical Officer, King Gandhi, Medical Officer, Health and Family Welfare Department, R. B. Viswanath also spoke about the diet to be observed by the patients. A similar programme was conducted at the Kallukuzhi Colony Health Unit for the Railway staff and their families.
