Plea for CB-CID inquiry into encounter

Special Correspondent

SALEM: Rights groups have urged the Tamil Nadu Government to order a CB-CID inquiry into the recent police encounter in which Gopi, a notorious history-sheeter, was shot dead here.

While the State president of Tamil Nadu Human Rights Organisation, Poomozhi, wanted a judicial inquiry, the Madurai-based People’s Watch’s co-ordinator A. Asokan, who had also led a fact-finding team, insisted on a CB-CID inquiry into the encounter, which he called a ‘fake’ one.

The activists alleged that police had arrested Gopi some four days ago. He was detained illegally in the Salem Town Police Station. He was killed after being taken to remote hilly terrain in Panamarathupatti, near Salem, on November 16.

Mr. Asokan demanded that cases under Section 302 of Indian Penal Code should be registered against the police men who carried out the encounter. He also urged compensation to the family members of the deceased.
