Child workers rescued

SALEM: A team of Labour Department officials conducted raids in Salem city and its suburbs recently and rescued four children aged below 14, who were found employed in industrial units.

The team raided over 50 commercial establishments including silver anklet manufacturing units, automobile workshops and welding units on Five Roads, Tiruvagoundanur Bypass, Sivadapuram, Panangardu, Vedukathampatti, Andipatti and Perumampatti areas.

The officials found four children employed in silver anklet manufacturing units and rescued them.

Special schools

Steps were being taken to admit the children in the special schools.

Efforts were on to initiate legal action against the employers of the children, officials said.

A press release issued heresaid the government had banned the employment of children aged below 14 years as domestic servants in houses and workers in hotels, restaurants, teashops, holiday resorts and other recreational centres, and industrial units.
