Ensure amity among students: Congress leader

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Senior Congress leader S.R. Balasubramoniyan has suggested setting up of a high-power committee to recommend measures for ensuring communal amity among students right from the school level.

Addressing media persons here on Friday, Mr. Balsubramoniyan said the committee should consist of a sitting High Court Judge, senior leaders of political parties, educationists and retired police officials and it should be asked to submit its recommendations to the government after meeting students at various levels. He said the recent communal clashes at the Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College only showed that the police machinery in the State had become ‘ineffective.’ He felt the government should have appointed a sitting judge to inquire into the clashes to bring out the facts.

Urging the State government to take stern action against those who were openly supporting the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in Tamil Nadu, he said leaders who were opposing the LTTE were being threatened. The State government should give proper protection to them.
