CHENNAI: Evening showers lashed several parts of the city on Friday, much to the delight of the residents concerned over the decline in rainfall.

Residents across the city said that the sudden showers began at 5.30 p.m. and lasted several hours. Sharp showers were experienced in various parts of the city, including Chetpet, T. Nagar, Perambur, Kilpauk and Taramani.

According to the Meteorological Department, Nungambakkam received 22 mm of rainfall and Meenambakkam 18 mm during the 12 hour reading ending at 8.30 p.m.

The rain slowed down traffic on several arterial roads such as Poonamallee High Road, Nungambakkam High Road and Inner Ring Road.

Power supply was disrupted for sometime in several localities, including Anna Nagar, Kodambakkam, K.K.Nagar and Triplicane. Tamil Nadu Electricity Board officials said that power supply was restored in about half an hour.

A meteorological official said that the rainfall was due to north east monsoon activity. The sky would be partly cloudy and the city would experience a couple of spells of rain or thundershowers on Saturday.
