CHENNAI: The traffic police have announced that two ‘U’ turns will be opened on the Little Mount-Raj Bhavan-Halda stretch, where the one-way system has been in force since April last year. The ‘U’ turns will be allowed from Monday morning. The ‘U’ turns will be only for two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheeler light motor vehicles. Medium motor vehicles and heavy vehicles will not be permitted to take the ‘U’ turns. One of the ‘U’ turns, to be allowed at the junction of Sardar Patel Road and Anna Salai, is expected to provide relief to motorists coming from the Kathipara flyover and going to the Guindy railway station, the Race Course and Velachery Main Road. According to a release, the ‘U’ turn near Chellammal Women’s College should be used by the motorists bound for Velachery. They should take the turn and proceed through the service road of the Guindy Bridge and Five Furlong Road to join Velachery Main Road. Vehicles coming on Five Furlong Road from Velachery and bound for the airport should take Five Furlong Road, the Guindy subway and Anna Salai and take the ‘U’ turn at the Halda junction to proceed towards Guindy. By using the facility, the vehicles could avoid taking a detour through Anna Salai-Taluk Office Road-Sardar Patel Road-Anna Salai. The second ‘U’ turn will be permitted at the junction of Sardar Patel Road and Taluk Office Road, near Raj Bhavan. The release says it will provide relief to vehicles moving from the Gandhi Mandapam side on Sardar Patel Road and proceeding towards Anna University. From Monday, the two openings on the median between Raj Bhavan and Anna University will be closed. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
