CMWSSB staff entitled to bonus

CHENNAI: Employees of the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) are entitled to bonus in accordance with law, the Madras High Court has said.

Allowing a writ appeal filed by the Madras Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board Official and Employees Union, represented by its general secretary, a Division Bench, comprising Justice D. Murugesan and Justice V. Periya Karuppiah, said the issue raised in the appeal was whether the board could be exempted from payment of bonus in terms of Section 32 of The Payment of Bonus Act.

The court held that the CMWSSB could not claim exemption under The Payment of Bonus Act. In view of the findings, the Bench said, the employees of the board were entitled to bonus.
