Discoms will be made to refund extra billing: BJP

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Accusing the private power distribution companies of showing losses with the help of fake documents and of making huge profits by presenting fake bills, BJP’s Chief Ministerial candidate V.K. Malhotra on Sunday said the discoms would be brought under the Right to Information Act and be made to not only make good the losses to the government exchequer but also be made to return the excess bill amount charged from people through fast running meters.

Addressing a meetings in his Greater Kailash constituency, Prof. Malhotra said the real face of these companies had been exposed. He said it would be ensured that the common man is able to see the balance sheet of these private electricity companies and for this these discoms would be put under the RTI Act.

Probe to be conducted

On the power front, the BJP leader said an enquiry would also be conducted into the massive loss to the public exchequer as a result of a scam in the privatisation of the Delhi Vidyut Board. “Agreements with private electricity companies would be reviewed, monopolistic control would be abolished and healthy competition between companies encouraged.”

Stating that “uninterrupted supply of electricity would be ensured,” he said, as electricity charges were too heavy for the poor people, the BJP will launch a scheme for providing them with electricity at subsidised rate.
