School Education Department contributes Rs. 12.61 crore to fund

CHENNAI: School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu handed over a cheque for Rs.12.61 crore to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Monday as his department’s contribution to the Sri Lankan Tamils Relief Fund. This is the largest contribution to the fund since it was set up last month. The fund had collected about Rs.25 crore till now.

With the contribution of the School Education Department, the total now stands at Rs.38.34 crore.

The Chief Minister’s Office, which had earlier declared that contributions to the fund should henceforth be handed over to the Chief Secretary, made an exemption for the School Education Department, which had collected the amount from teachers and other staff spread across various categories of schools and its directorates.
