Youth held on cheating, money doubling charges

MADURAI: A 24-year-old youth identified as Shajat Rehani, alias Yehani, of Varanasi was arrested here on Monday on charges of cheating and money doubling.

Police said that following specific information that some person was moving under suspicious circumstances in the S.S. Colony area, a close watch resulted in the detention of Rehani. Discreet inquiries revealed that he had come from Varanasi and was staying in a house here for the last one month.

Though he claimed to have come here on a business trip, his statements were contradictory, police said.

A senior police officer said that they had seized a few mobile phone numbers from Rehani, who conversed in fluent English and Hindi.

The S.S. Colony police have registered a case under IPC Sections 409 and 420.

Interrogation is on with a few more persons in this connection as police suspect that there may be a larger network allegedly involved in doubling of currencies and other illegal acts.
