Girl drowns in pond

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: A teenaged girl drowned while her sister-in-law was rescued when the duo jumped into a pond near Attibele, on Monday night, after they were scolded by relatives for stealing sugarcane from agriculture fields.

The Attibele police said that Manjula (25) and her sister-in-law Prabha (19) jumped into a pond unable to bear scolding from their relatives when they were caught while stealing sugarcane and pumpkins.

While Prabha drowned, Manjula was rescued. The incident occurred in Guddatti village near Athibele around 7 p.m.

The duo were in a habit of stealing vegetables and sugarcane from their neighbour’s agricultural fields, and had been warned several times, the police said.

However, on Monday when they were caught red handed while stealing, their parents and in-laws scolded them. A passerby rescued Manjula, but Prabha drowned, the Athibele police said.
