Govt. making best use of SHG concept: Minister

‘Movement is a boon to women’

Udhagamandalam: The Government is making optimum use of the self-help group concept to uplift women, said the Khadi Board Minister, K. Ramachandran, at Nadugani near Gudalur on Tuesday.

Inaugurating a fair price shop of a local self-help group, he said that the movement was a boon to women. To facilitate the progress of the self-help groups a number of schemes were being implemented by the Government.

Reservation

Though the general demand was for only one-third reservation for women in many of the local bodies the number of women was much more. Through the social welfare department women especially those belonging to the underprivileged sections of society were being assisted in a number of ways.

Electronic machines

The District Revenue Officer, T. Abraham, who presided, said that the possibility of providing electronic weighing machines to the fair prices outlets run by self-help groups would be explored. The Project Officer, Tamil Nadu Women Development Corporation, D.F. Danraj, also spoke. The Revenue Divisional Officer, Dhanabal, welcomed the gathering. The District Supply Officer, Kuppuswamy, proposed a vote of thanks.
