Hotel employees seek better facilities

BANGALORE: Hundreds of hotel employees on Monday urged the State Government to bring the hotel industry under the ambit of Factories Act so that thousands of hapless workers would be able to get protection and benefits under the Act.

Participating in a convention of hotel employees organised by the Hotel Employees Federation of India here, the workers unanimously noted that while hotel owners continued to earn handsome profits, the workers were left in the lurch. Hence, the industry should be brought under the purview of the Act to offer safe working condition and other benefits.

Inaugurating the convention, federation president N. Vasudevan regretted that majority of the workers were yet to get the statutory minimum wages. Hence, the convention resolved to urge the Government to constitute a special squad comprising the local police inspector, representatives of recognized trade Unions and officials from the Labour Department.

The present inspection by officials of Labour Department alone was insufficient to check evasion of payment of minimum wages and ensuring better working conditions, the workers said. Also, salary to workers should be paid through cheques to ensure payment of minimum wages.
