Official favours tradable renewable energy certificates

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Pramod Deo, Chairman, Central Electricity Regulatory Commission, on Tuesday made out a strong case for tradable renewable energy certificates.

While some States, with higher potential of renewable energy, would not face any problem in meeting the norms of mandatory procurement of renewable power, others with limited potential would find it difficult. The solution lay in the scheme of renewable energy certificates, he said.

The Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy had constituted a working group to study the issue of renewable energy certificates.

(Under the concept of renewable energy certificates, States with lower renewable potential can fulfil the renewable purchase obligations by buying power from States that have higher potential]

Dr. Deo was inaugurating a two-day conference-cum-exhibition on wind power organised here by the World Institute of Sustainable Energy (WISE).

Approach paper

Noting that the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission had prepared an approach paper on the inter-State transfer of wind energy on the basis of unscheduled interchange (UI) charges, Dr. Deo said the Forum of Regulators had set up two groups: one for renewable energy and the other for open access regulations.
