Jal Board CEO gets two-week term

NEW DELHI: Holding the Delhi Jal Board Chief Executive Officer guilty of committing contempt of court by not abiding by an undertaking given to it to repair all broken sewer lines and stop flow of sewage into the storm water drain in four colonies of South Delhi, the Delhi High Court on Tuesday awarded two-week civil imprisonment to him and two other officials of the Board.

The Court also imposed a fine of Rs.20,000 each on the three, CEO Arun Mathur, Chief Engineer (Drainage) R. K. Jain and Executive Engineer (Civil) P. Pant.

However, Justice S. N. Dhingra suspended the sentence for three months to allow them to implement the undertaking given to the Court.

In case the entire flow of the sewage into the storm water drain is not stopped within three months from Tuesday, the respondents would undergo the civil imprisonment.

However, they would be liable to pay the fine in any case which would be recovered from their salaries, the Court said.

The Board had given the undertaking in May 2006 that it would repair the broken sewer lines in Greater Kailash, Masjid Moth, EPR Colony and Chiragh Enclave and ensure flow of sewage into the storm water drain.
