Sarita advances; Preeti loses

Ningbo City (China): Indian pugilists had a mixed day in the office with defending champion L. Sarita breezing into the quarterfinals of the World women’s boxing championships while Preeti Beniwal fell by the wayside.

In her second round bout Sarita tamed Samiha Hassan of Egypt, 12-5 to storm into the last eight stage of the 52kg category. She now takes on Tserenchimeg Tserendorj of Mongolia.

National champion Sarita took her opponent by surprise with her early aggression, to take a 4-1 lead after the first round.

The Egyptian tried her best to keep up in the second round but Sarita hit back with a vengeance in the third, winning five of the seven points, to seal the bout in style.

Preeti, however, was not so lucky and the Indian crashed out after losing the second round match 3-7 to Cheng Dong of China in the 60kg category. — PTI
