Justice Markandey Katju’s articles “The task of taking India forward” (Nov. 24) and “Take on this intellectual challenge” (Nov. 25) make a strong case for intervention by intellectuals to build a better future for India. Our country holds a unique place in the comity of nations. The phrase ‘unity in diversity’ encapsulates the character of India. If we adhere to the principles of secular humanism, social justice and sustainable development, our future will certainly be bright.

Justice Katju has done well by pointing out that communal riots started in India after 1857 and were fuelled by the British to suit their policy of divide and rule. If all of us understand that our history was written by our colonial masters to keep us divided, the prevailing communal tensions can be reduced and harmony established.

One can perceive in the articles the yearning of a true patriot, who wants to see a united, peaceful, prosperous and powerful India. As Justice Katju has rightly pointed out, the time is ripe for intellectuals to take the initiative to guide the people, promote the country’s rich, age-old, composite culture and take the country forward on the path of progress.

The Kalidas-Ghalib Academy for Mutual Understanding is indeed a very commendable and foresighted venture. What India needs is an action force that understands the pulse of the people. I hope the academy will be one. India is not a poor country. It has its values, culture and immense and intelligent human resource as its strength.
