Denying leave for adjournment motion

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Members of the Opposition on Wednesday walked out of the Assembly in protest against denying leave for an adjournment motion on the government’s failure to arrest the accused in terrorist activities.

Aryadan Mohammed (Congress) who gave notice for the motion, accused the government of failing to take action against terror suspects. The government could not take timely action to arrest the culprits in various cases, including those who had participated in the SIMI camp held at Vagamon, he said. Opposing the motion, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan accused the Opposition of trying to blow issues out of proportion for political gain. No terrorist activity had been reported in the State during the past 30 months. A special team constituted for probing such cases had found that Noorusha Tariqat, an organisation based in Hyderabad, had taken youth from the State for suspected terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.

But no such instances had been reported in the State. The Congress was trying to win the BJP votes in its favour, he said.Deputy Leader of the Opposition G. Karthikeyan denied the charge and said the Congress did not intend to accuse any community of involving in terrorist activities. Based on the explanation of the Home Minister, Speaker K. Radhakrishnan denied permission to move the motion and the Opposition members walked out in protest.
