Reservation: UDF flays government

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The United Democratic Front (UDF) on Wednesday accused the State government and the Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) of playing “hide and seek” in the matter of implementing the High Court verdict on Backward Classes (BCs) reservation norms.

Addressing a press conference after a meeting of senior UDF leaders here, UDF convener P.P. Thankachan said the government had failed to implement the High Court verdict on the norms till date and was deliberately delaying its implementation. The UDF meeting urged Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan to convene an all-party meeting on the issue urgently. The UDF, Mr. Thankachan said, was of the view that Backward Classes should not lose any of their existing benefits. “We are willing to give our opinion on this issue and will extend all cooperation to the government if an all-party meeting is convened.” To questions on the Opposition coalition’s view on the High Court verdict, Mr. Thankachan said the onus was on the government to take a stand on this issue. The Opposition would express its views at the proposed meeting.
