Work affected at Chennai port

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The day-to-day operations in the Bharti Dock and the Jawahar Dock of the Chennai port were suspended since Tuesday night following bad weather.

Talking to The Hindu on Thursday, Chennai Port Trust chairman K. Suresh said the port had operated at 20-30 per cent of its capacity for the last two days owing to the heavy winds and continuous rain. The operations were expected to resume late Thursday evening.

Loading and unloading of containers and coal were affected at the Bharti Dock and the Jawahar Dock respectively. However, DP World officials said they had resumed the operations at the Bharti Dock since Wednesday evening. “We are limping back to normalcy. A passenger ship from the Andaman and Nicobar islands, which was at the outer anchorage on Wednesday, has been docked. On Thursday, we did not offload thermal coal, steel coal, logs and petroleum products due to high ranging; moreover cranes could not be operated. As there is a slight improvement in the weather, we are trying to commence operations from the third shift on Thursday. The backlogs will be cleared by Friday evening,” Mr. Suresh said.
