Power situation worsens: Balan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Electricity Minister A.K. Balan said on Thursday that the power crisis in the State was beginning to worsen due to a further fall in the supply of electricity from the central generating stations.

Making a statement in the Assembly, he said the State had been receiving only between 600 and 700 MW of electricity from these stations for the last several months, against a quota of 1,041 MW. The quantum came down further a couple of days ago to 440 MW.

All the thermal power stations in the State were working to full generation capacity now. Still the State was experiencing a deficiency of 500 MW to satisfy the peak-time demand in the evenings.

He said the whole nation was experiencing power shortage now. Kerala was managing the crisis better that the other States, he claimed, giving the particulars of power supply restrictions now in force in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and elsewhere. The installed power generation capacity in the country as a whole was now of the order of 1,47,000 MW.
