Farmers demand good quality seedlings

KRISHNAGIRI: Farmers of Krishnagiri district demanded good quality seedlings from government horticulture department at the farmers’ grievances day meeting held here on Thursday.

Vivekanandan from Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam said that now they were getting only poor quality plants. Farmers should be allowed to choose plants from private nurseries.

Officials from horticulture department said that the government had approved 25 nurseries. Farmers could choose the plants from these nurseries.

The agriculture department has not received enough applications from farmers seeking pension, an official said. A total of 2,13,555 Uzhavar cards were distributed to farmers in the district.

New applications were being processed.Mariappan from Chettipalli demanded a permanent sluice at the eastern side of the Thimmapuram lake. Sundaresan from Mittapalli panchayat complained that roadwork was not taken up at Chinnathalapadi.

Krishna Reddy from Samipudur demanded construction of a bridge across Sanathkumara river, which connects Panchapalli. N. Barathi, Director of the Growmore Biotech Limited, made a power point presentation on maximising revenue through bamboo cultivation through tissue culture.

He also displayed shirt, towel and plywood made of bamboo.
