Emulate U.S.

Eyewitnesses in Mumbai have said that the police patrolling the Gateway of India were caught completely off guard. Can security at major entry points not be tightened? George Bush might have been a total failure in many aspects but he did not allow another 9/11 to happen in the U.S.

The ease with which the terrorists took control of five star hotels is astonishing. The terror strike exposes the failure of our intelligence agencies and the government, and the lack of preparedness on the part of the hotel authorities. Since 9/11, the Americans have become doubly cautious at every level and have not shown any laxity when it comes to security.

Why have there been no terrorist attacks in the U.S. after 9/11? Appeasement and vote-bank politics, competitive populism, no concrete action, and lack of political will are the reasons for the continuing terror strikes in India.

We have to admit that we have failed to put in place a vibrant intelligence mechanism by which we can tackle terrorism. It is worth mentioning that after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, the U.S. woke up to the ground realities of terrorism and curbed it effectively.

India has many faceless enemies and it is too big a place to defend effectively 24/7. Death and destruction are probably the price many large democracies will pay more often in future. As it becomes increasingly difficult to attack America, terrorists will look for targets elsewhere. Constant vigilance, better policing and intelligence-sharing may help to contain the attacks.
