HIGH ALERT: A Delhi Police PCR van stands guard as a security guard mans the entrance of a five-star hotel in New Delhi on Thursday.

NEW DELHI: Security at five-star hotels in the Capital has been stepped up in the wake of terror strikes in the country’s financial Capital, Mumbai.

The staff at different hotels carried out extensive checking of vehicles before allowing them entry into their premises on Thursday. Two-level checking is being conducted for cars.

Barricades were also placed outside the main five-star hotels, while private security guards kept a tight vigil on the movement outside the hotels.

The Delhi police have advised hotels across the Capital to step up measures to increase security. Police personnel have been deployed around hotels and are also taking rounds in Police Control Room vans.

Some hotels have cancelled the leave of their employees to ensure additional manpower.

“We are taking all precautions. Delhi Police officers got in touch with us on Wednesday night itself. We have deployed increased manpower. Leaves have been cancelled. Instead of two entry points to the hotel, only one is being maintained,” said Akhil Mathur, Director of Marketing and Communications of Le Meridien Hotel.

“Checking of cars is being done. The police have helped us put up metal detectors inside the hotel. Two-level checks are being conducted. The approach road to the hotel has not been kept straight but a zig-zag way has been created. We have enough security at the moment, but we may increase it if the need arises,” he added.

Sanjukthaa Roy, Director of Public Relations of Taj Hotels in Delhi, said: “Taj Hotels are monitoring the development of the unfortunate situation unfolding at the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower in South Mumbai and are cooperating with the police. We would like to channel all our efforts and energy to ensure speedy normalisation of the situation as best as we can. We are working closely with the authorities and are taking precautions across all our hotels.”

An official at ITC Maurya Sheraton said the hotel had upgraded its security to the highest level to deal with any emergency and crisis situation.

“All possible measures that need to be taken have been taken to ensure the highest level of security,” she added, without giving out specific details.
