‘3-E’ concept to bring down accident rate

Tirupur: The police administration is now focusing on an integrated approach based on ‘3-E’ concept (enforcement, engineering and education) to bring down the fatal accident rate in Tirupur, according to Superintendent of Police G. Karthikeyan.

He told The Hindu that action against drunken driving, overloading on carrier vehicles, over speeding and riding triples on motorcycles had been intensified between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. in the city.

As part of the drive, people using dazzling lights and for indulging in violations like non-possession of valid documents of respective vehicles too were being fined on the spot.

Mr. Karthikeyan said that to reduce human and economic losses caused by traffic crashes and congestion, the police would join hands with the civic bodies to establish dividers/ centre medians along arterial roads as far as possible.

Besides, bays would be established at bus stops to facilitate stopping of public transport coaches to lift the passengers without obstructing the normal traffic flow. “The inlets will be set up in coordination with Tamil Nadu State transport Corporation”.

To ease traffic congestion in busy localities like near the Kumar Nagar bus stop situated along Tirupur-Avinashi highway, the road sides would be declared ‘no parking zones’.

The SP said the police would campaign more among students on proper ways to use the roads to minimize the accidents, to help build a society that was aware of the importance of following road safety norms.

Earlier on the day, Mr Karthikeyan inspected the general functioning of the police department in the sub-division.
