Three of family electrocuted

Chennai: Three members of a family were electrocuted in their house in Ambedkar Nagar, Adambakkam, on Thursday evening.

Chandran (38), his wife Saraswathi (30) and their children Vinodkumar (12) and Vinodini (7) were moving an almirah inside their house when the accident took place. As the tiled roof of their house had started leaking , the four of them tried to move the almirah to a dry place.

The Adambakkam police said that the almirah came into contact with an electricity junction box. Power was reportedly leaking inside the box and when the almirah touched it, the four were struck by electricity. In the impact, Vinodkumar was thrown to a distance and he landed on a cot and escaped. His parents and younger sister were electrocuted, the police said.

As news about the incident spread, shocked neighbours and friends gathered in the house . Chandran was a construction worker and Saraswathi worked in an export firm in Guindy. Vinodini was a Standard II student.

There were three more rain-related deaths in the city and its suburbs.

P. Balraj (21) of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar near Perambur fell into a trench dug for construction work in the locality and drowned. He had been married only 17 days ago. Fire personnel retrieved the body later.

A man identified as Raja alias N. Ravikumar (55), who was working as a security guard in a private firm, was electrocuted near the Anna Statue at the junction of Anna Salai and Wallajah Road on Thursday evening.

Police said that the deceased, who was inebriated, leaned on an electricity junction box, which snapped open and exposed high voltage lines.

The man, who hailed from Soorampatti in Erode, stayed with his sons in the city. The body was taken to Government General Hospital for post-mortem.

Two-year-old V. Srinivasan of Srinivasa Nagar, Padi, fell into a drain on Wednesday evening and died. His body was taken to Kilpauk Medical College for post-mortem.
