Tender coconut ban lifted

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation has lifted the ban on the sale of tender coconuts in the city following an assurance from the traders that they would dispose of the husks promptly, precluding any possibilities of mosquitoes breeding in them.

The health wing of the corporation had slapped the ban on the sale of tender coconuts in and around the Ernakulam General Hospital and the Ernakulam South railway station premises following the confirmation of dengue fever in the city.

The ban order was issued as the civic authorities feared that the disease-spreading mosquitoes may breed in the decaying husks.

The sellers have offered to remove the coconut husks in the vehicles that bring the tender coconuts. The ban order was lifted following the assurance, said Mayor Mercy Williams.
